How can I minimize nausea and vomiting during pregnancy (NVP)?

What can I do?

Some tactics that can help minimize NVP include:

  • Eat frequent and small meals instead of three large meals a day

  • Drink fluids before and after meals instead of with meals. This will also help with heartburn, another common issue experienced during pregnancy. Treating heartburn with antacids may also help NVP

  • Avoid greasy or spicy foods, especially in the evening

  • Ginger, lemon, vitamin B6, ice water, crackers and pretzels are all known to reduce nausea and vomiting

  • Acupressure can be helpful too. This video provides an easy to follow demonstration.

Food aversions are normal during pregnancy and may make cooking difficult. Go easy on yourself, ask for help from your family and friends and order in if that is a resource available to you.
