What is postpartum depression?

Postpartum depression is a depressive episode that typically begins within the first month postpartum, but can happen anytime during the first year and can effect any parent. Postpartum depression is not the same as the “baby blues” which is usually felt in the first few days after giving birth and then subsides. Symptoms are the same as general depression but are often related to infant care or the adjustment to parenthood. New parents may need the help of those around them to recognize the signs and symptoms of postpartum depression.

You are not alone if you are experiencing symptoms of postpartum depression, it is more common than is widely discussed. Having a baby is a major adjustment for everyone involved in raising the child.
