What is the difference between a midwife and a doula?

A midwife is a trained medical professional who offers prenatal, labour and postpartum care for low-risk pregnancies. Midwives have completed at least four years of education, and are experts in pregnancy care.

A birth doula is a trained labour support person who offers physical and emotional comfort measures during birth. They may also provide information and education to support an expectant parent in pregnancy but do not offer medical advice or provide medical care.

You may have a birth doula and a midwife, a birth doula and an obstetrician but you can not have an obstetrician and a midwife.
