What is the process for maternity/parental leave and collecting benefits in the United States?

While there is no federal benefits program for expectant or new parents in the United States, the Family and Medical Leave act provides up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave. However, there are conditions that must be met, such as working for the company for at least one year, having logged at least 1250 hours, and working for a company that has a minimum of 50 employees within 75 miles of your work location.

There are a few states (including California and New Jersey) that offer around four to eight weeks depending on the type of birth you experience. Check with your state’s disability insurance program and your employer for any additional benefits they may offer.
