Why am I so itchy?

What causes itchiness?

Itchiness during pregnancy is often caused by increased blood flow as well as the stretching and tightening of the abdominal skin during the third trimester.

How to treat itchiness?

Mild itching is common and treatments include: wearing an unscented moisturizer and wearing loose-fitting, cotton, or other natural-based material clothing.

What to look out for in extreme itchiness:

In rare cases, extreme itching may be a sign of a more serious condition called Obstetric Cholestasis (OC) . This liver condition is caused by a buildup of bile salts as the body cannot properly process bile from the liver to the digestive tract. If you are diagnosed with OC, your care provider will perform regular liver function tests (LFTs) to monitor both your health and the health of the baby.
