How do I know if I have lost my mucus plug?

What is a mucus plug?

The mucus plug is a thick, jelly-like substance that seals your cervix and protects from unwanted bacteria.

What does it mean to lose your mucus plug?

Losing your mucus plug means that your cervix is changing, and labour could be hours, days or weeks away. Most pregnant individuals will not lose their mucus plug until after 37 weeks pregnant.

The mucus plug has a similar consistency to snot and is sometimes tinged with blood. It may come out in chunks or all at once. Often pregnant individuals will not notice losing their mucus plug as there is already an increased amount of discharge.

Contact your care provider if you lose more than two tablespoons of mucus plug or it is bright red in colour.
