What are pap smears and why are they important?
A pap smear checks for cervical cell changes at the top of the vagina. 90% of cervical abnormalities and cancers are due to the human papilloma virus (HPV) that can be transmitted sexually. Cervix cell changes are slow and can regress, so tests usually start by age 25. HPV vaccines are very effective at preventing genital warts and cervical cancer.
