How can I unclog a clogged milk duct?

If you are experiencing a clogged milk duct, a gentle massage behind the clogged duct while feeding can help it clear. A warm compress on your breast during a feed can help with your let down and to release the duct.

Be aware of baby’s latch, and ensure that you are breastfeeding/chestfeeding from both sides. Contact a lactation consultant or your doctor if it does not go away on its own.

It is important to continue breastfeeding/chestfeeding as reducing or eliminating feeds can make the problem worse. If you develop fever or chills, or the area around the lump becomes red and firm, contact your health provider immediately as this could potentially be mastitis.
