What type of diet should I have when breast/chestfeeding?

A healthy diet:

In general, it is safe to eat most foods while breastfeeding/chestfeeding. Focus on consuming a healthy and diverse diet with as many whole foods as possible. It is normal for lactating parents to experience intense hunger in the beginning of their lactation journey. Typically a lactating parent will need an additional 400-600 calories per day.

Other considerations:

Lactating parents should consider limiting their caffeine intake, alcohol intake, and consumption of fish that are high in mercury. Those who consume a vegetarian/vegan diet should pay attention to consume foods that are rich in iron and vitamin B12. It is also recommended that you continue taking prenatal vitamins while breast/chestfeeding.
