What can I do to help with constipation postpartum?

Your first few bowel movements after giving birth may cause some feelings of anxiety as the sensation can be comparable to birth. Conditions like damage to the pelvic floor or anus during childbirth, hemorrhoids or stitches may make going to the bathroom difficult or uncomfortable.

Eating a fibre rich diet (green leafy vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains) and keeping hydrated with fluids and soup are your first defences against constipation. Placing a bland barrier like petrolatum jelly before and after bowel movement, and regular rinsing or soaking with water (with or without epsom salts) can be soothing. Talk to your doctor before taking any stool softeners or laxatives for constipation.
