What are my baby’s milk needs in the first year?

General guide

Most newborns drink milk every 2 to 3 hours, or 8 to 12 times every 24 hours.

  • First 2 days of life: 15 mL (0.5 oz) per feed

  • First week: 30-60mL (1 to 2 oz) per feed

  • Second week+: 60-90 mL (2 to 3 oz) per feed

  • Month 2: 120 - 150 mL (4-5 oz) every 3 to 4 hours.

  • Month 4: 120 - 180 mL (4 to 6 oz) per feed

  • Month 6: 240 mL (8 oz) every 4 to 5 hours; babies can start a bit of water
